| Notes : Born 6th in a family of 9 on Lane St. in Jessup, PA. A Mrs. Durkin assisted as midwife. Baptized at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Peckville. Attended school in Jessup through 5th grade and in Moosic through Junior in High School. Worked in the summers of 1912 and 1913 as a slate picker at the Old Forge Breaker, PA, Coal Co. for 88 cents per 10 hour day. Moved to Underwood, quit school in 1914 and started work in the mines as a "nipper" @ 14.18 cents per hour. |
