Notes : He and his father worked in the "Iron Stone" mines at Brotton, England, and wishing to better themselves, came to America, circa 1883, landing in Philadelphia at the foot of Chestnut Street. They walked up Chestnut and Broad and entrained for Antrim, Tioga Co., PA, where there were bituminous coal mining operations. Here he obtained employment in the mine, and in slack times worked in the woods as a Bark Peeler (hemlock bark was used in tanning). Here, he became acquainted with Amy (Fowler) Montgomery, who had parted from and received a divorce from James Montgomery on account of incompatibility. |
