There
is a fun controversy going on over these images from the Mars
Global Surveyor (MGS.) Explanations range from dunes and
natural geographic formations to giant worms and glass-tubes
holding monorails.
ORTHODOX:
There does not appear to have been an official NASA/JPL explanation
for these images, but a letter
from an expert at JPL claims that they are actually dunes. A
statement
from JPL in May, 2000, inviting the public to view the MGS images,
suggests that they are due to erosion effects.
ALTERNATIVE:
The alternative theories are wilder and, at least, more fun
to read about. Richard
Hoagland, former NASA consultant and science advisor to
CBS during the Apollo missions, is the self-proclaimed discoveror
of the MGS photo shown above, and claims that they are man-made
glass tunnels. Then there was self-proclaimed cosmic visionary,
Dr.
Earnest L. Norman, wrote a book in 1956, wherein he claims
to have channeled Martian Nur El and learned of the underground
cities of Mars, interconnected via monorails that are supported
by huge partially-submerged metal tubes, 300-500 feet in diameter.
It is interesting that the M04-00291
image is about 3.15 km in width (see data)
and the width of the tube therefore appears to be about 80 meters
(check it out yourself), or about 260 feet.
JIMBO's
VIEW:
If these tubes were really made by intelligent lifeforms, I
would think that they would be of a uniform design. There would
be no real reason to build them in random shapes as opposed
to a straight line and the ridges should be equidistant. Given
their "natural looking" formation, I would stick with
the Orthodox theory.
